07.02.2024
The unmanned underwater vehicle Ran has gone missing under a glacier in Antarctica. The vehicle, owned by the University of Gothenburg, is one of three similar in the whole world that is used for research and has contributed to important knowledge about the so-called Doomsday Glacier.

Novacavi Cable in Antarctica

03.04.2023
Designed and manufactured by NOVACAVI an electric custom cable with single mode optical fibers for underwater cameras for static application in extreme environments. This cable has been successfully used during remote monitoring of marine fauna in the Antarctic waters of the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (Ross Sea Region MPA) within the DISCOVERY project of the National Antarctic Research Programme.

Hydramec & Scantrol Provide Equipment for Endurance

20.04.2022
Hydramec and Scantrol are honoured to have worked together once again to supply bespoke subsea winches to facilitate the Endurance22 expedition. Hydramec provided the expedition with two 25000m winches with 3.5mm fibre optic cable. The fibre optic cable would be tethered to the autonomous unmanned vehicle (AUV) to gather real-time data during the ship's survey. Without this type of cable, the crew would have had to bring the AUV back to the vessel to see the images.

The Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust is pleased to confirm that the Endurance22 Expedition has located the wreck of Endurance, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship which has not been seen since it was crushed by the ice and sank in the Weddell Sea in 1915.

Sabertooth Hunts Shackleton's 'Endurance'

08.02.2022
Two Saab Sabertooth robots will go under the Antarctic ice in the hunt for the wreck of the Endurance, sunk during Shackleton’s ill-fated expedition in 1915. Lowered by helicopter, the Sabertooths will be sent through a prepared hole cut in the ice to embark on a 160km search mission to find, survey and film the wreck, believed to be 3000m (nearly two miles) underwater, its precise location unknown.

NOC takes Boaty McBoatface to Travel Under Antarctica’s Melting Thwaites Glacier

13.12.2021
Engineers from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) have headed out to the Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica with renowned autonomous underwater vehicle, Boaty McBoatface, to help understand what is causing ice loss from the glacier and better predict how its deterioration could contribute to sea level rise.

British Antarctic Survey Selects DriX USV to Enhance its Scientific Capabilities

23.11.2021
The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), a world-leading centre for polar science and operations, adds iXblue DriX Uncrewed Surface Vessel (USV) to its advanced robotic survey means. Deployed from polar research stations and from the British polar research ship RRS Sir David Attenborough, the DriX USV will help BAS conduct multi-disciplinary sciences such as surveying the impact of ocean currents on melting ice flow or mapping the seabed in the polar regions.
