OceanTools Delivers First OceanSIP-SD Subsea Inclinometer Package to the Gulf of Mexico

Aberdeen based engineering firm OceanTools was recently approached by a major international drilling contractor seeking a technical solution for the efficient and accurate attitude measurement of subsea conductors and wellheads.

“We relish opportunities like this,” said Kris Yorke, Business Development Manager at OceanTools. “The customer approached us with a very clear brief as to the specific engineering challenges they faced, and what they needed in terms of sensory equipment and data output to allow them to satisfy their tight construction specifications. The result was the successful design and development of the OceanSIP-SD which is effectively an application-specific, re-taskable high-tech digital bullseye.”

At the heart of OceanSIP-SD is a very precise dual axis inclinometer with integrated light activated underwater display unit. Housed in a precision engineered robust ROV deployment frame incorporating an OceanCELL battery pack, metrology stab and contact footplate, the OceanSIP-SD is an integrated subsea inclination measurement system that is the perfect solution for taking accurate subsea conductor and wellhead measurements.

The battery operated unit obviates the need for an umbilical to the surface. Power consumption is minimised due to the ability of the system to remain in sleep mode until such time as an ROV or diver shines a light upon the display unit, thereby activating the system for use. The unit is then capable of returning to sleep following a programmable delay.
