Industry bodies Subsea UK and RenewableUK have joined forces to deliver the Cables 2019 conference, which will focus on knowledge sharing and driving collaboration across the subsea cable industry.

The two-day event will take place on the 29 – 30 October at P&J Live in Aberdeen and will feature a series of panels and sessions designed to give an insight into the subsea cables industry which has seen a growth in recent years due to an increase in offshore renewable projects.

It is forecasted that between 2018 and 2028, almost 20,00km of cables for offshore wind are to be installed globally, worth £5.3bn.

Subsea UK and RenewableUK have partnered on the event to ensure that the conference encompasses the subsea cable industry across the entire blue economy, and that the event fosters collaborative working and knowledge sharing.

The conference will feature world-class experts speaking on panels and at workshops which will look at the entire cable life cycle, examining what can be done to reduce cost and risk on projects while improving efficiency and performance.

Sessions will include an overview into the current subsea cable market, insights from asset owners, information on financing for subsea cable projects, insights from installers, decommissioning and maintenance strategies. There will also be opportunities to take part in Q&A sessions with stakeholders and developers.

Neil Gordon, chief executive of Subsea UK, said: “The increase in offshore renewable projects has provided a boost to the UK’s subsea cable industry which has grown exponentially in recent years. We are seeing an increase in companies developing new technology to support this growing industry. Developing innovative technology and ways of working is a big focus in the renewables sector as it looks to maintaining its infrastructure and maximising economic efficiencies on projects.

“This is an area where other underwater sectors, in particular oil and gas, have invaluable experience and we have arranged this event in partnership with RenewableUK to encourage knowledge sharing between these industries”.

RenewableUK’s chief executive Maf Smith said: “The growing subsea cables market represents a multi-billion-pound prize for companies who are prepared to seize it.

“At Cables 2019 we’ll be playing our part in helping UK companies by releasing an update of our unique report showing upcoming opportunities for firms involved in the manufacture and installation of export and array of cables worldwide, at national, regional and global level. This is the deepest dive into the data available anywhere, thanks to the world-leading expertise of RenewableUK’s Project Intelligence team”.
