The MTS/IEEE OCEANS’17 conference returns to Aberdeen, Scotland with a focus on energy and offshore renewables.

14.06.2017
The bi-annual MTS/IEEE OCEANS conference returns to Aberdeen – 19th to 22nd June 2017, at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre.

This is the second time that OCEANS has come to the UK and both times Aberdeen has been the host. Not only that, but OCEANS’17 Aberdeen will be the 60th Occurrence of the event. First presented in 1970 in Seattle OCEANS has become established worldwide as one of the major proponents of marine engineering, technology and science education. Neil Gordon CEO of Subsea UK (the conference’s Gold Patron) and Dr Gordon Drummond of NSRI will kick-off our Plenary session and take the opportunity to underline “A vision to sustaining our marine futures”. Major topics in the Aberdeen OCEANS are Marine Energy and Marine Renewables.

Key to our energy and marine renewables focus theme is a Plenary presentation by Dr Gareth Davies, Director of Aquatera on the future of Marine Renewables. Aquatera, based in Orkney has become a global leader in the marine renewables sector and has a prodigious international portfolio of oil & gas projects. Dr Davies will provide an overview of current European R&D projects developing new sensor technologies and focus on an end-to-end approach of the value chain of ocean observation, also addressing proposed transversal innovations to the community. A cross-cutting aspect of the presentation will be the potential and challenges of integrating new developments on current commercial autonomous platforms. There are several technical sessions on the topics featuring original papers from experts and practitioners in the field from as far away as Scotland through to USA, South Korea and China (to name but a few).

Prof John Watson of Aberdeen University and General Chair of the meeting promises that MTS/IEEE OCEANS’17 Aberdeen is a must visit opportunity for the local marine community.
