Xodus to present Arctic environmental safety approach at Russian conference

19.10.2016
Delegates at an industry conference in Moscow, Russia this month will hear how Xodus Group’s integrated approach to oil and gas projects in the Arctic can ensure environmental safety while also minimising costs.

The ‘Russian Offshore Oil and Gas Development: Arctic and Far East’ (ROOGD-2016) taking place on October 26, aims to share industry practices in the development of offshore fields and resources of the Arctic shelf.

Xodus offers engineering and advisory support to clients in the oil and gas, LNG, renewables and utilities industries worldwide. Xodus Group’s Rebecca Hewlett will provide an insight into the company’s integrated approach to environmental safety at the conference on October 26.

Ms Hewlett, Global Environmental Engineering Lead at Xodus said:As a frontier basin, the Arctic is in a unique situation to consider environmental safety at the outset, at the design phase. We believe there is a real opportunity to improve environmental safety over the life of the asset by integrating environmental considerations within a project, rather than allowing it to exist as a report".

This ensures environmental safety whilst minimising costs over the life of a facility by allowing design measures to be implemented to remove or reduce impacts early in the project cycle. In addition, embedding a robust environmental philosophy across the corporate and project management cycle can lead to both major reputation and performance benefits at later stages of the project.

The much-cited assessment of Arctic mineral resources from the US Geological Survey (USGS), states that the region may contain 13 percent of the world’s undiscovered oil, and 30 percent of its undiscovered gas. In May, Norway awarded Arctic drilling licences to 13 oil companies which included unexplored part of the Barents Sea.

Simon Allison will discuss the company’s work on developments in the Barents Sea.

Mr Allison, ‎General Manager - Scotland at Xodus Group said:Developments carried out in the Arctic provide an array of unique challenges. As with any environment with a climate which is unprecedented, typical tried and tested techniques may no longer be sufficient. We will use ROOGD-2016 as an opportunity to discuss some of our innovative solutions to these challenges while considering financial and environmental sensitivities.

ROOGD-2016, hosted by Gazprom VNIIGAZ LLC, will be held on October 26. Xodus is being supported by Scottish Development International at the event.
