8th Annual Decommissioning Summit to break down silos and give industry ‘boost’ for uncertain future

08.12.2015
With operators demanding more joined-up thinking from the supply chain in order to do more with less in an era of depressed oil prices, the decommissioning industry’s flagship knowledge-sharing event has responded by organizing cutting-edge seminars on breaking down the silos that hamper efficiency and innovation offshore.

For the first time, the Annual Decommissioning & Abandonment Summit, to be held February 23-25 in Houston, will unite the well intervention and late-life production community with operators’ top decommissioning leaders to look afresh at the technologies and techniques needed for cost-effective end-of-life transition.

Now in its eighth year, the Summit brings more than 700 experts and decision-makers and over 60 of the world’s leading operators and solutions providers together in one place to grapple with the looming challenges facing the offshore industry.

“For the late-life production and decommissioning community, the stakes are high and making the right decisions have never been so important,” said Paul Soskin, project director for Summit host, DecomWorld. “With the low oil price accelerating end-of-life decisions, we’ve made sure the best people are on hand to drive discussions on the most business-critical issues.”

Headline interactive sessions include a wells regulatory roundtable, providing a unique opportunity to engage with regulators. Led by dual workover coordinators from the BSEE district support team, the session will give attendees an update on the expectation and guidelines for subsea intervention and vessel selection for offshore operations. It will review the pre-existing regulations and reveal the inspection process in the interim before the API17G regulations are released.

With low oil prices bringing forward the decommissioning of uneconomic fields, decisions taken during late life production are more important than ever before. This year’s Summit presents a workshop designed to facilitate effective late life decision making for deepwater wells – taking full consideration of intervention, riserless operations and a smooth transition to inevitable plugging and abandonment.

Led by Jay Odom, Senior Production Engineer GOM for Anadarko, the workshop will give a rare insight into the 15K riserless stimulation project on four wells to eliminate fine migration and restore the PI for the field. It will include an in-depth assessment of the planning phase working alongside BSEE, as well as cost-estimation analyses demonstrating the ROI from 15K riserless stimulations.

The Summit will feature an entire ‘Deepwater Day’ that explores all aspects of decommissioning and plugging and abandonment in this challenging new environment.

An expert panel led by Dave Barrow, Senior Advisor Subsea Completions for Chevron, and Bruce Crager, Executive Vice President of Endeavor Management, will guide discussions toward building an economic model that will allow operators to predict the costs to perform various projects using different vessel types. Fresh options for cost-effective P&A, including the use of resins, cement bong logging, and new approaches to casing cutting, will also be reviewed.

Also new to the 2016 Summit will be the first-ever Decommissioning & Abandonment Industry Awards, providing a long-overdue focal point to showcase the brightest individuals, technologies, innovations and projects to inspire an industry in challenging times. Exciting award categories include: Best Project Management Strategy for Decommissioning and Abandonment, Most Promising New Technology, P&A Pioneer, and more.

“This year’s Summit is about enabling the industry,” said Paul Soskin. “Everything from the meticulously prepared seminars and workshops to the D&A Awards, which are needed to acknowledge the real excellence already at play in the industry, is about giving professionals and decision makers a support boost as they head into an uncertain future.”
