Base Materials Becomes the First Syntactic Foam Subsea Buoyancy Manufacturer with DNV Type Approval and Approval of Manufacture

20.11.2024
Showcasing the unrivalled quality and high performance of its low-density syntactic buoyancy material range, Base Materials has become the first syntactic foam subsea buoyancy manufacturer to receive DNV type approval (TAC) on its Subtec® 11500 material and Approval of Manufacture (AoM) for the complete range of Subtec® materials.

Following rigorous testing by DNV, the world’s leading classification society and recognised advisor for the maritime industry, Base Materials received type approval for its Subtec® 11500 buoyancy material qualified for use in seawater depths down to 11,500 metres. The approval facilitates the use of the material in full ocean depth applications. In addition, the Subtec® range of seven material grades has also been awarded DNV Approval of Manufacture (AoM).

Speaking about the certification Stephen Sloan, Head of Commercial at Base Materials, says: “When it comes to thedeepest and most critically rated subsea applications, the performance of materials and equipment alike are mission-critical for both crewed and uncrewed subsea vehicles. As such, we were delighted to work closely with DNV across the stringent testing of our Subtec® 11500 buoyancy material, designed and qualified for use down to 11,500 metres.

“The approval showcases the unquestionable quality and robustness of the material. Additionally, it highlights our commitment to continually investing in research and development to provide innovative materials that set the standard in even the most critical applications.”

DNV is a global classification body that delivers testing, certification, and technical advisory services to the maritime industry. DNV certification provides assurances that the products and services accredited meet the regulatory and safety standards required for the end use applications.

With densities from 400 – 650 kg/m3 and grades to suit a range of seawater depths from 2,000 metres to 11,500 metres, Base Materials’ Subtec® buoyancy materials comprise high-grade hollow glass microspheres and a novel thermoset polymer matrix, producing ultra-high strength-to-weight characteristics with excellent water ingress resistance. Each grade in the range is colour coded to ensure depth ratings match within buoyancy assemblies.
