Fincantieri and Saipem to Collaborate in the Subsea Domain

Fincantieri, the only shipbuilding group in the world active in all high-tech marine industry sectors, and Saipem, global leader in the engineering and construction of infrastructure for the energy sector, both offshore and onshore, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to evaluate commercial and industrial opportunities for cooperation in the field of autonomous subsea vehicles and their integration with surface and underwater units. The Memorandum, signed at Palazzo Marina, the headquarters of the General Staff of the Italian Navy, is among the initiatives aimed at promoting and developing national excellence in the Underwater sector.

Terna Tests Terradepth AUVs for Marine Geophysical Surveys

The first test was conducted off the coast near the port of Casamicciola Terme, on the island of Ischia (Naples, Italy). During geophysical surveying of the seabed, Terna’s technicians were able to test the performance of the “Gavia” drone, the AUV from Terradepth employed for the purpose, equipped with advanced sensors, including Echo Sounder (MBES), Side Scan Sonar and HD Camera.

Kraken Receives Synthetic Aperture Sonar Order from NATO CMRE

Kraken Robotics is pleased to announce that it has received an order from NATO Science and Technology Organisation (STO) Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) for a Miniature Synthetic Aperture Sonar (MINSAS) System from Kraken. The order followed an openly competed tender process and was delivered in Q4. Kraken’s MINSAS was selected having met CMRE’s rigorous requirements for a robust, broadband Synthetic Aperture Sonar. Kraken’s MINSAS will be integrated onto a NATO CMRE’s Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle (UUV), where it will also support advanced Artificial Intelligence capabilities such as Automated Target Recognition (ATR).

Lan Cable for Underwater Farming

NOVACAVI has recently supplied a special underwater Lan hybrid cable to be deployed for the farm experimental project called Nemo’s Garden. This world’s first underwater cultivation system of terrestrial plants located off the coast of Noli, southwest of Genoa, Italy, consists of an array of suspended, transparent, dome-shaped greenhouses called biospheres, anchored to the bottom of the sea.

Seaeye Falcon Picked for Archaeology and Offshore Energy

Italy’s DST (Deep Sea Technology) has chosen a 1000m-rated Saab Seaeye Falcon DR robotic vehicle to support archaeological research and offshore energy. The Seaeye Falcon DR will be employed by Naples-based DST, a commercial diving business, across its operations supporting offshore energy and maritime archaeology in both shallow and deep waters. The Falcon package includes a Tritech Super SeaPrince sonar and skid-mounted five function manipulator and rope cutter.

The Installation of ISWEC (Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter) off the Coast of Pantelleria has been Completed

Eni announces that it has completed the installation of the world's first ISWEC (Inertial Sea Wave Energy Converter) device connected to the electricity grid of an island. It is located about 800 metres off the coast of the island of Pantelleria and can reach 260 kilowatts of peak power generation converted from wave energy. This experimental campaign, conducted under real operating conditions, will lead to useful results for developing the second-generation device currently under study.

Saipem Subsea Drone for Inspection of Shell and Petrobras Fields in Brazil

Saipem has been awarded a contract by Shell and Petrobras for the utilisation of its FlatFish subsea drone in two pilot projects encompassing the inspection campaigns of two ultra-deepwater fields offshore Brazil, operated respectively by the two energy companies. These two projects with Shell and Petrobras are pilots and fall within the framework of the research and development programme of ANP, the Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels. The target is to qualify the drone to execute unmanned, vessel-free inspections to support the monitoring and maintenance campaigns of the subsea infrastructures.

Founders Eric and Wendy Schmidt donate research vessel Falkor to Italy’s science agency to conduct ocean science in the Mediterranean and beyond. Schmidt Ocean Institute announced today the donation of its 82.9-meter research vessel, Falkor, to the Italian Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), expanding the science agency’s fleet of research vessels and continuing Falkor’s legacy of conducting ocean science. The ship will be renamed to Gaia Blu.

This specially engineered armoured cable presents a copper four-conductor configuration and a double armour made of high tensile 316 stainless steel, preformed and prestressed wires.
