Opportunities for collaboration between Scotland and Japan to be highlighted at workshop

03.02.2019

The opportunities which exist for Scottish companies to collaborate on R&D projects with Japan will be highlighted at a workshop at this year’s Subsea Expo.

Hosted by Subsea UK, the National Subsea Research Initiative (NSRI), Scottish Enterprise, and the Nippon Foundation, the workshop will explore the opportunities which exist for Scottish and Japanese subsea companies to carry out R&D projects.

The workshop, which will take place on Tuesday, 5th February, will feature presentations from NSRI, the Nippon Foundation, Scottish Enterprise, Scottish Development International (SDI), Wood, Pale Blue Dot, Mitsubishi Electric Corp, Yokogawa Electric Corp and SMS.

Andrew Kinsler, operations director of SMS, will give a presentation on their experience of taking part in the first call for Scottish firms to collaborate on R&D with Japanese companies. The first call saw a total of £8.8million invested into five collaborative projects.

The second call for companies is now open, with organisations being asked to get involved by identifying how their offerings meet the needs of the evolving subsea sector under the theme of the ‘Blue Economy’. The call includes the wider underwater industries, including renewables, aquaculture and carbon capture storage.

The event will provide a platform for companies to learn more about the collaboration with the Nippon foundation and the opportunities which currently exist. Companies can submit an initial expression of interest via the Subsea UK website which has a closing date of 15th February 2019.

Tony Laing, NSRI director for market research and acceleration, said: “Our collaboration with the Nippon Foundation has the potential to see a total of £15million invested into R&D projects over the next three years. Our workshop at Subsea Expo will allow companies to learn more about the opportunities and see how they can get involved in this opportunity to collaborate with Japanese companies.”

Subsea Expo will take place from 5-7th February 2019 at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre. This year’s event will have the theme ‘Innovating the Future’ and will look to stimulate high-level discussions on subsea technology and the rise of digitalisation, looking at how they are accelerating the ability to deliver sustainable energy and achieve operational efficiency.

Entrance to the exhibition and conference is free of charge; pre-registration is recommended via the website - www.subseaexpo.com.
