Research to start on end-of-life oil fields after the UK’s National Oceanography Centre secures funding

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has secured funding from the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), which will take robot submarine ‘Boaty McBoatface’ around end-of-life oil and gas fields. The Autonomous Techniques for infraStructure Ecological Assessment (AT-SEA) project, led by the NOC will trial the concept of using submarines like Boaty for high-tech, low-impact monitoring to pick up any potential environmental impacts at these sites.

Saipem signed a bareboat charter contract with the Samsung Heavy Industries Company yards for a new drillship, the Samsung Santorini which will be delivered in November 2021. The bareboat charter of about two years duration allows Saipem to strengthen the competitiveness of its fleet without investing in new assets, but by leveraging its consolidated expertise in the selection and management of technologically advanced vessels. Equinor and the partners Petoro, Vår Energi and Total E&P Norge have decided to develop the Lavrans discovery and the Kristin Q-discovery which is a part of the Kristin field. This constitutes phase 1 of the Kristin South project, and today the plan for development and operation (PDO) will be submitted to the minister of petroleum and energy. Capital expenditures for this first phase will total about NOK 6.5 billion.

AWS Wave Energy Converter Takes Shape in Glasgow Ahead of Testing

Last week AWS Ocean Energy achieved a critical milestone in the construction of its 16kW Archimedes Waveswing wave energy converter when the two major sub-assemblies were joined together and the Waveswing finally took shape. Final hook-up of the internal systems is now under way at Malin Marine in Glasgow and AWS expects to start commissioning and dry-testing early in July, before deployment at the European Marine Energy Center (EMEC) in Orkney later this year.
