Klein Marine Systems Signs Development Agreement With SAAB to Provide Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) Technology

Klein Marine Systems, a global leader in sonar technology has received a contract to provide Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) hardware technology to Saab Kockums AB (Linköping, Sweden). The sonar hardware will be integrated onto the Saab AUV62-MR, an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), designed for mine-countermeasures (MCM) missions. Saab has signed a contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) for the AUVs. The vehicle has the ability to quickly map and produce high-resolution sonar images of the seabed over large areas and detect various types of objects. The system provides the navy with the ability for covert reconnaissance as well as solve multiple tasks simultaneously with fewer resources and less risk to personnel.

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a contract to a team led by Saab, Inc.’s newly formed accelerator, “Skapa by Saab”, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to contribute to the Autonomy Standards and Ideals with Military Operational Values (ASIMOV) program. The DARPA- ASIMOV program “aims to develop benchmarks to objectively and quantitatively measure the ethical difficulty of future autonomy use cases and readiness of autonomous systems to perform in those use cases within the context of military operational values”.

Saab’s Seaeye SR20 eWROV Succeeds in Milestone Water Trials

Saab UK announces that the Seaeye SR20 eWROV, its most advanced fully-electric work-class remotely operated vehicle, has successfully completed inshore water testing. The testing was a key part of the verification and validation work package, testing against the specification, measuring performance, and stressing the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) as a system. In particular, the SR20 demonstrated its high degree of precise manoeuvrability and dexterity, using both manual joystick control and automation. This testing has paved the way for sea trials which will take place in spring 2025.

Saab receives order for Sabertooth

Saab has received an order for the autonomous underwater vehicle Sabertooth from the marine geophysical company PXGEO. The order value is SEK 620 million and deliveries will take place 2023-2025. The order includes more than 20 Sabertooth vehicles, which makes this the largest Sabertooth order to date. These will form part of PXGEO’s MantaRay solution for offshore seismic data acquisition and will be used for deployment and recovery of equipment during ocean bottom surveys.
