Request for Tutorial Presenters

Due January 8, 2018

The Local Organizing Committee is accepting applications for tutorials to be presented at the OCEANS’18 MTS/IEEE Kobe / Techno-Ocean2018 at the Kobe Convention Center in Kobe, Hyogo on Monday, May 28, 2018. We request Tutorial submissions be made by January 8, 2018. Submissions will be evaluated as they are received. Acceptance notices will be sent as soon as the committee completes its review and makes a decision so those providing the tutorials can plan and prepare. Final notice of acceptance will be issued no later than January 31, 2018 in order to facilitate registrant sign-up. Submissions that are received after January 8 will be considered, but at the discretion of the local technical committee, these will be treated as free-of-charge workshops if space is available, and there will be no fee paid to the provider.



We are seeking applications from interested parties to present half day or full day tutorial sessions. Half day sessions will run three hours and a half including 20 to 30 minutes for a break. Full day tutorials will run up to eight hours, including time for two breaks and a one hour recess for lunch. The preference is for half day tutorials. However, full-day tutorials will be considered. Acceptance of full day tutorials will be based on the depth and complexity of the subject matter and availability of space.

Tutorials should complement the technical program. Their purpose is to expand the attendees’ knowledge of a key technology or emerging areas of technology and research. Topic areas will include established or emerging research within the field, as well as related fields or application areas that are clearly relevant to the OCEANS community. They should not be commercial or promotional in nature, nor should they focus exclusively on the research of a single individual or group.

Tutorial proceedings will not be provided in hardcopy. They will be made available by the provider to the OCEANS’18 Kobe / Techno-Ocean2018 Technical and Tutorial Chairs so that these materials can be posted on the OCEANS’18 Kobe / Techno-Ocean2018 website prior to the beginning of the conference. Tutorial presenters will receive an honorarium in accordance with the OCEANS Conference policy.

Guidance for Tutorial Proposal Submission

Purpose of a tutorial session

A tutorial should improve and expand the audience’s knowledge and practice through the presentation of the latest science and engineering techniques. It can also help career professionals get a robust introduction to an area into which they would like to expand their practice. OCEANS tutorials typically provide information that is not easily gleaned from manuals, textbooks, or academic papers. Participants are paying for the presenter’s synthesis of basic science, engineering practice and their personal experience or research, and may qualify to receive continuing education credit through the IEEE.

Submission process

Tutorial proposals should be submitted via email in PDF format to the Tutorials Chair: TutorialsChair@oceans18mtsieeekobe.org　 Applications should provide detailed information which will allow the Technical Program and Tutorial committees to evaluate the quality and importance of the topic, the value of the presentation materials, and the teaching ability of presenter. Tutorials can be taught by one or more persons. The written application should include a 500 to 1,000 word abstract which includes the following:

Topic Overview
1. Subject matter to be presented.
2. Applicability of the material to current day practice in the respective field.

Target Audience
1. The intended audience.
2. Baseline level and content of the audience’s knowledge and skills.
3. Core learning objectives.
4. Anticipated number of participants.

Content Details
1. A detailed outline of the presentation, with estimated time devoted to each item. This should be an attachment to the abstract. It will not be included in the abstract word count.
2. Duration and proposed breaks are outlined above.

Format
1. Manner of presentation.
2. Specify required classroom facilities.
3. Specify any audiovisual presentation that will be required.
4. Identify any additional requirements.

Additional supporting materials.
1. Curriculum Vitae for all presenters.
2. A short biographical sketch of each presenter suitable for publication in the conference program.
3. A brief bibliography for the proposed presentation.
4. If there are multiple presenters specify the allocation of topics and tasks.
5. Full contact information for all presenters. Include personal web pages if available.
6. Samples of previous presentation given on the selected subject matter (optional for the proposal package).
