The Marine Technology Society (MTS) is thrilled to announce the integration of MATE Inspiration for Innovation (MATE II) and its signature program, the MATE ROV Competition, into the society’s lineup of program offerings. By combining efforts, MTS and MATE can enhance their reach and impact in inspiring young minds and preparing them for careers in marine technology.

Formed in June 1963, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) stands stronger than ever six decades later. In the early 1960’s, a group of business, academic, and government leaders recognized the need for a professional society to bring together scientists, engineers, and others interested in the rapidly growing fields of ocean technology and marine affairs. They convened a committee to establish the character, name, objectives, and basic policies of MTS - launched as a not-for-profit corporation in June of 1963.

MTS and MATE II – the managing organization behind the MATE Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Competition – are joining forces! With a focus on our shared mission of fostering the next generation of ocean leaders, this collaboration will serve to advance both STEM education and cutting-edge technologies to solve global issues.

Marine Technology Society (MTS), the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) and Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI), announced a new partnership today that will focus on the effective development and application of marine science and technology for purposes of exploration, understanding, and sustainable use of the ocean and its resources. The collaboration includes supporting student and early career marine technology professionals, women in marine science and technology, and other joint activities between the two societies and the Institute.

Beginning this month, the Marine Technology Society (MTS) and the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) will launch three professional certification programmes for marine technologists and technicians. These programmes serve as a passport for job mobility and create new opportunities for MTS and SUT members.

Awarded jointly by both societies, the Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding, sustained, international contribution to the development, application, or propagation of marine/ underwater technology toward the advancement of ocean exploration. The award is named in honour of Captain (Ret) Don Walsh, an accomplished American oceanographer, explorer, retired naval officer, and marine policy specialist. He and Jacques Piccard were aboard the bathyscaphe Trieste on January 23, 1960 when it made a record descent into the Mariana Trench, which is the deepest point of the world's oceans. Dr. Edie Widder, an MTS member, won the inaugural award in 2020.

The Marine Technology Society and The Society for Underwater Technology are proud to announce that Dr. Edie Widder is the inaugural recipient of the Captain Don Walsh Award for Ocean Exploration. Dr. Widder is an MTS member, MacArthur Fellow, a deep-sea explorer, and conservationist who combines expertise in oceanographic research and technological innovation with a commitment to reversing the worldwide trend of marine ecosystem degradation.
