‘Virtual dolphins’ help make the first trial of marine robotic software a success

Software that could better enable a fleet of robotic vehicles to work together to perform tasks such as seeking and tracking whales and dolphins, has been successfully trialled in Loch Earn, Scotland. This software acts like a ‘central brain’, making decisions about where the robots should go based on the changing environment around them, which is measured using in-built sensors. The trial was conducted by SeeByte and ASV with support from the National Oceanography Centre (NOC).

New Initiative Allows Primary Pupils to Delve Deep into the Underwater World

Primary schools across Scotland to benefit from a new teaching resource as Subsea UK works with education to encourage learning in science. A new, exciting initiative between industry and education will bring science to life in classrooms across Scotland. Subsea UK has been working with education bodies and teachers to create a resource which will capture the interest and imagination of primary pupils in science subjects. Aligned to the Curriculum for Excellence, Subsea Channel, will provide teachers with a resource which shows real-life applications of the scientific principles they teach.

ROV visual inspection in Absheron field

In October 2015, GAS Azerbaijani branch was awarded to provide ROV visual inspection of the existing TOTAL’s well head in the Absheron field. TOTAL is the operator of the Absheron offshore condensate gas field, and the development plan is currently being defined.

Bordelon Marine takes delivery of the M/V Brandon Bordelon, a DP2 Ultra-Light Intervention Vessel (ULIV)

“Cost Effective and Fit for Purpose” n November, 2015 Bordelon Marine takes delivery of the MV Brandon Bordelon. This highly specialized vessel features a helideck, a 60 ton AHC crane with 3000m of wire, POB (60), a mezzanine deck with internal office and control rooms capable of supporting two (2) full work class ROV systems. The vessel also offers 6,200 sq. ft. of clear useable deck space. The Brandon comes equipped with (2) two Ranger2 Pro thru-hull USBL full systems. The vessel delivers a fully integrated ROV control room, ROV support offices, below deck work and storage spaces, extensive communications and ROV data network, plug and play, with patch panel racks installed. … all tied into the vessel systems, bridge, office, and accommodation spaces. The vessel is designed with removable bulwarks around the entire aft of vessel along with power, water, air, and hydraulic oil connections on the deck. The vessel is also equipped with four additional below deck Tier 3 generators, providing fully redundant power to the crane and ROV systems.

Fugro provides underwater services to Total following contract award

Fugro has been awarded a five year contract for the provision of underwater services to Total E&P UK Limited (TEP UK). Under the contract, which runs from July 2015 and includes extension options for a further two years, Fugro is providing a full range of ROV services to conduct inspection, repair and maintenance activities on TEP UK pipelines, subsea assets and jackets

2G Robotics Delivers Two Deep-rated Laser Systems to Oceaneering

2G Robotics recently delivered two deep-rated ULS-500 subsea laser systems to Oceaneering International, Inc.'s business unit, Oceaneering Survey Services (C&C Technologies) ("Oceaneering"), a leading provider of deepwater seafloor mapping services, subsea surveys and satellite positioning. Including these two ULS-500 systems, Oceaneering now utilizes six of the ULS-500 systems with its Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) as part of its advanced survey and inspection services for assessing pipeline and flowline integrity. Oceaneering has used the 2G Robotics ULS-500 system to accurately and efficiently inspect 2500 kilometers of pipeline and flowline.

The BIRNS Millennium™ series connectors developed with the new contacts have had groundbreaking testing results, including a maximum insertion loss of 0.7 dB at signal frequencies to 3GHz, with an associated maximum SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) of 1.7:1. Even more remarkable, the new coax contacts withstand open face hydrostatic pressure to depths of 1433m so far in initial testing protocols, with more testing currently under way. Additionally, the new design provides incredible ease of assembly and connects directly to a standard MIL-STD-348 SMA connector.
